1997 Working-Class Studies and the Future of Work

The third biennial conference in June 1997 featured keynote speakers Tillie Olsen; labor studies scholar and organizer Elaine Bernard; David Roediger, author of The Wages of Whiteness; and playwright Manny Fried.  The conference featured three days of panels on topics such as Classing the Curriculum, Criminalization of the Working Class, Revisioning the Writing of the 1930s, Rethinking Marxism in/through African-American Literature, In and Out of Class in the Academy: Teachers and Staff, and many more.  In addition to keynote speakers and panel discussions, conference participants took part in many community-based programs, including a community reading by Tillie Olsen at Park Vista Nursing Home, a photo exhibition by Martin Desht at the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor, and an art exhibit by Bryn Zellers at the Beat Coffee House.  Other off-campus events included panels at the IBT Local Union Hall, a community tour entitled "Working-Class Housing: Continuity and Change in Youngstown," and a poetry reading at the Beat Coffee House.
